Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical
Written by Julie Bee on January 7, 2021
Hair, the rock musical by Gerome Ragni, James Rado, and Galt McDermott, debuted off-Broadway in 1967 & moved to Broadway in ’68. I took a deep dive into this record last year when Alpine’s Sul Ross University did a great production. The French version found its way to my collection through a donation to the radio station just months earlier, and I played songs from both albums on a special episode of The Oldies Show in April 2019, where I also spoke with the two lead actors in the Sul Ross production and played some fun covers and other songs from this era. We’ll rerun that Oldies Show on Jan 15 on Marfa Public Radio if you missed it.
I pulled these soundtracks out again this week since we have finally entered the Age of Aquarius…and because I’ve been enjoying everyone’s long hair during the pandemic shutdown. The title track is my favorite, but there are so many really wonderful songs here. And after seeing these songs being performed in context, I will never hear ‘Let the Sun Shine In’ the same way again.
